New Art: Unfolding

I had the privilege and joy to paint my first commissioned door this summer. The piece entitled “Unfolding” was restored to its home hinges just a couple weeks ago after being transformed with my brushes and me here at the studio (aka – our back porch!).

The process of painting doors continues to be a remarkable learning experience for me as an artist. Unlike a traditional canvas that is truly a fresh surface, each door that comes to me already has a story. The home it has come from, the people who have opened and closed it, the threshold it has been hinged to, and the type of door it is – all inform the images and colors that spread across one or both of its surfaces. These are fairly involved projects, and it’s both easy and wonderful to lose myself in their making.

If you’re curious to see more – either completed or in process, give me a holler!

About Martha Phelps Studio ~ creative on purpose

...a meandering journal of a changing life and the unexpected graces it brings. Earlier posts may provide some history, but this series of writings aren't likely to follow a straight line as I explore topics such as raising kids, making choices, self discovery, the impact of change on a family and how to (hopefully) live with balance and purpose. www.marthaphelps.com
