A Decade

A few months ago my wise middle child observed that I seem to have lived several different “lives.” Not so much in the “born again” ilk, but definitely in the “shifted gears, tried a new thing, revamped my world, stepped into a different reality” kind of way. Each  phase has been marked by certain critical life-changing events and experiences that caused enough of an upheaval in my former way of life that there was little choice but to begin anew. Sometimes the changes were standard milestones that many encounter (like becoming a parent) while other times an old life was cruelly displaced overnight – not by choice but because of fate.

One decade ago (more or less), the most recent “life” I am living began. And what a decade it has been. Starting in 2010, in the midst of a family crisis, love arrived and decided to stick around. Since then, the milestones have gathered like a mighty and wonderful cairn.

We’ve experienced two high school graduations, two university graduations, at least 15 countries traveled to (see Gracie’s passport!), hundreds of soccer matches, theatre performances, races run, classrooms taught in in our own neighborhood as well as on the other side of the planet, the insane game of golf learned and then awarded, two weddings, adventures and miles logged in on trails, in deserts, on beaches and on the ocean, plus tall mountains have been summited. Loss and grief have been present alongside healing and health. We’ve gone from living under the same roof to being spread from Portland to Los Angeles; learning has never stopped, careers have been launched, university is happening again – as well as working for a university, and new degrees are being earned.

Every day is remarkably full. They aren’t all perfect or fun, but we are here and grateful and living THIS life out loud and with a sense of wonder and delight.

Fortunately, I have great photo proof of this amazing  decade – this incredible life that we are living. Sit back and enjoy one family’s ten year ride

About Martha Phelps Studio ~ creative on purpose

...a meandering journal of a changing life and the unexpected graces it brings. Earlier posts may provide some history, but this series of writings aren't likely to follow a straight line as I explore topics such as raising kids, making choices, self discovery, the impact of change on a family and how to (hopefully) live with balance and purpose. www.marthaphelps.com
